I have a new short story out today, as Louisiana Literature published my piece “Baggage Wagons,” about a struggling circus, in its latest issue (volume 42/1).
An excerpt:
If the crowd’s reaction was anything to go by, they had just wrapped the best show they’d put on in months. When the stage lights came back up, the performers could see the shapes of dozens of people rising to their feet. Children cheered while their parents’ vigorous clapping ricocheted off the tent’s metal frame. Only the first few rows of faces were visible from the stage, but everyone involved in the curtain call could see that those faces looked happy.
