“The Wampanoag” appears in The Brussels Review

by Jeff Fleischer

My books have obviously taken most of my time and attention lately, but I also had three short stories accepted for fall 2024 publication and the first of those came out today in The Brussels Review. “The Wampanoag” is about two boys waiting to greet their older brother on his scheduled return from a trip overseas. The magazine also included some lovely custom artwork to go with the story.

An excerpt:

“Erik, hurry up. They’re going to be here soon!”

“I’m…going as quickly…as I can,” his younger brother sputtered, trying to work his way down the hill. Erik breathed poorly at the best of times, each gasp a labor. Mostly, James had learned to tolerate it, and he always had a sharp word for neighborhood boys who mocked Erik’s ailment. Today, though, he felt impatient.
